The Practice
Our office is of medium size and has been involved in the design of housing since it was established in 1985. It succeeded the practice of Stillman & Eastwick-Field, established in 1949.
Most of our technical staff are qualified architects and there is a strong supporting administration.
Our premises, which are easily accessible, are close to central London and incorporate an extensive networked IT system, reprographic facilities and a technical library.
We are a RIBA registered practice, a corporate member of the Association of Planning Supervisors, and we are registered with Constructionline.
Commissions
Our work ranges from private domestic projects to large hospital schemes. It embraces new build, refurbishment, landscaping, developments within conservation areas and work to listed buildings. A large part of our work is within the housing sector.
We have designed buildings for all kinds of environments and areas of life, including private, social and special housing, education, health, business and leisure developments.
Our residential schemes have included accommodation for nurses, doctors, university dons, students, key workers, children, elderly people and those with special needs, as well as more conventional flats and family housing of many kinds and at a wide range of densities.
Our projects have been built using conventional JCT contracts, `Design & Build' contracts and some are now in hand using Partnership agreements.
Approach
We have no prescriptive style, but focus closely on our clients needs and try not to bring preconceived ideas to projects. We believe this approach, when coupled with the careful development of a brief and careful appraisal of a site is the key to successful buildings.
We recognise that each project throws up its own demands regarding the type of construction, use of materials and form of procurement and we always try to respond flexibly and work within the constraints of budget and programme.
We are sensitive to the siting of buildings and the spaces defined by them. Our aim is to produce buildings appropriate to their setting and to enhance them by the incorporation of good soft and hard landscaping as an integral part of our designs.
We regularly work in conservation areas and listed buildings. We are sensitive to these special environments. We have an excellent record of helping to achieve planning success where projects involve difficult and often conflicting issues.
By close study of our client's needs, and of the site and surroundings, we aim to provide a service, whatever the size of a commission, that extends to all aspects of building from the feasibility of a project to advice on subsequent maintenance.
We consider sustainability and environmental issues in all our work and seek to challenge those we work with to address them too.
Awards
Many of our buildings have been featured in the architectural press. We have received several awards for recent projects. These include a Civic Trust Commendation for the Design Centre at Rugby School, a Brick Design Award Commendation for Queen Mary's House Hospital, Hampstead and a variety of awards and competition successes for some of our social housing.
