We are a small practice operating from the heart of the Cotswolds - our office is in the village of Kelmscott, made famous by William Morris and the Kelmscott Press. We are located within a triangle formed by Oxford, Swindon and Cheltenham.
William Morris is famous for having said: "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful".
We like to use simple, real materials and put them together in an imaginative way that emphasises their natural characteristics. We believe that a natural environment is the most healthy environment. We also like to connect internal spaces positively to the outside world, as well as having a passion for weaving water into to our work as closely as our clients will permit!
The Practice principal is Peter King RIBA. The practice offers all regular architectural services and can additionally offer Interior Design and Landscape/Garden Design by calling on the services of associates David Carden (interior design) and Sarah Ewbank (landscape design).
Our ability to carry a design from the inside right through to the furthest reaches of the garden/landscape can bring an integrity which is difficult to achieve with separate practices working on different aspects of a project.
Our work is primarily residential, though we have prior experience of commercial, industrial and healthcare work.
Due to our location we specialise in extensions and alterations to Listed buildings and buildings in Conservation Areas, though we engage in and are happy to undertake newbuild work also. We have a strong leaning towards Arts and Crafts, Organic, ecologically sustainable and low energy design.
In terms of energy efficiency we generally employ a high-insulation/passive solar gain strategy to achieve energy savings in a relatively low-technology way for most projects.
The Practice won the RIBA Wessex Region 'Town and Country' Design Award for 'Best Extension/ Alteration Project' in 2003, for our extension to a Grade II Listed cottage in Kelmscott, Oxfordshire.
What we offer - a summary:
1. A Free initial consultation. We make no charge for our initial visit to discuss your project, and we will take as much time as is necessary to discuss your plans, ideas and requirements.
2. Clarity on services and fees. Our Services and Fees Proposal states what services we believe to be necessary to achieve your aims. Each service is accompanied by a clear fee breakdown which gives you forward visibility on architectural fees.
3. A successful track record. Carden King have a 100% success rate with Planning and Building Regulations Applications. Every project we have submitted for Planning Permission and Building Regulations consent has been successful.
4. A proven ability to deliver an award-winning standard of architecture.
5. Our project structure includes frequent cost checks to ensure that we keep proper control of your budget for the project.
6. An integrated approach to your design. If you opt to have Interior Design and Landscape Design in addition to Architecture we offer a coordinated and integrated approach. This means interior, architecture and landscape are in focus and working together.
7. A 3D computer model of your project. We will provide you with a detailed 'SketchUP' model once the nature of your project is determined. The model has colours, textures and shadows, and you can walk or fly around the model as well as change settings to show accurate shadow casts for any minute, hour, day or month of the year. Interiors can also be modelled in this way.
